According to legend, Saint Christopher originally named  Reprobus, devoted his life to carrying the weak and poor across a river. One night, when he was carrying a child, he felt his burden grow heavier with each step. When questioned, the child declared that he was Christ and that Reprobus was thus bearing the weight of the world. To prove that it was true, the child told him to drive his staff into the ground. The next day the staff had turned into a lush fruit tree. This is how Reprobus later came to be known as St Christopher, derived from the Greek name Christophoros meaning "Christ-bearer."
